About Instrument Technician Training

This course will introduce industrial instrumentation as used for Calibration, Installation, Loop testing, trouble shooting, Maintenance, Commissioning, process measurements and control. Specifically, the course will discuss measurement terminology, differentiating between analog and digital signals, describe the instrumentation used for electronic testing and develop the principles of operation of transducers used for industrial process measurement and control.

Module 01

  1. Introduction to instrumentation
  2. Basic electrical (Ohm’s law-Current, Voltage, Resistance) Parallel/Series connections, Resistance in a conductor due to change in length, area and temperature.
  3. AC & DC Current/Voltage, its sources, Kirchhoff’s Current law, Kirchhoff’s voltage law, Transformer, Magnetic field of a solenoid, Electrical power and energy calculation in AC and DC Circuit, AC to DC Convertor circuit.
  4. Basic electronics, Electronics components & its properties (Resistor-Resistance, Inductor-Inductance, Capacitor-Capacitance), Transistor, Diode, Relay, Wheat stone bridge circuit, Integrated circuit, Instrument transformer, Instrumentation Amplifier, Microprocessor, Analog signal, Digital signal, Analog to Digital Convertor, Digital to Analog Convertor, Analog Module – AI & AO, Digital module – DI & DO.
  5. How a field instrument used in process industries transmitting signal (Analog – 4 to 20 Ma, 1 to 5 VDC, resistance, Millivolt) and discrete signal (ON/OFF Switching signal) converted into digital, its process and how its provides a user interface in HMI to read real process parameters.
  6. Transducer- Active and passive transducer (Resistive/capacitive/inductive transducer) its application in process instrumentation and control.
  7. Measuring Practices

Module 02

  1. Cable, Types of Cable, its specifications & uses.
  2. Cable laying, cable dressing, cable tagging, cable glanding, cable termination, Cable continuity test and insulation resistance test.
  3. Cable trench, cable tray-Type & size, cable tray fabrication and installation. Conduit, type and size & its installation.
  4. Impulse tubing/Air tubing/Instrument air manifold installation and testing.
  5. Grounding / Earthing system and testing.
  6. Familiarize with Junction box, local control panel, marshalling panel, system panel etc.

Module 04

  1. Introduction to Temperature measurement (Temperature/units of measurement)
  2. Temperature gauge
  3. Resistance temperature detector (RTD)
  4. Thermocouple (T/C)
  5. Thermistor
  6. Temperature Switch
  7. Pyrometer
  8. Installations, calibration, loop testing, trouble shooting and maintenance.

Module 06

  1. Introduction to Level measurement.
  2. DP type level transmitter
  3. Displacer type level transmitter
  4. Understand the concept of wet and dry leg method used in liquid level measurement
  5. Understand the concept of normal and interface level measurement
  6. Capacitive type level transmitter
  7. Ultrasonic type level transmitter
  8. Level switch High
  9. Level switch Low
  10. Installations, calibration, loop testing, trouble shooting and maintenance.

Module 08

  1. Introduction to project specification & Engineering Drawings.
  2. Instrument index
  3. Instrument specification sheets or data sheets
  4. Cable schedule diagram
  5. Instrument Block diagram
  6. Hook up diagram
  7. Wiring diagram
  8. Location layout plan drawing
  9. Piping and instrument diagram
  10. Instrument loop diagram
  11. Instrument segment diagram
  12. Engineering standard drawing
  13. Preparation of instrument loop package and documentation.
Examination: Candidates will have to appear in examination for the following papers on completion of program module.
Trade theory : 100 marks
Trade Practical : 100 Marks
Eng. Calculation & Science : 100 Marks
Engineering Drawing : 100 Marks
Viva Voice : 100 Marks
Candidate will be awarded course completion certificate on successfully completion of the entire course module.
Instrument Technician Course Contents in brief:
  1. Basic electrical & Electronics
  2. Introduction to working principle of industrial instruments like PG, PT, PDT, PSH,PSL, TG, RTD, TC, TT, TSH, TSL, FT, LT, Control valves, Solenoid Valve, Emergency shutdown valve etc.
  3. Introduction to Test equipments used in calibration, Loop testing, Troubleshooting and Commissioning of industrial instrumentation like HART Communicator, Multifunction calibrator, Process loop calibrator, Dead weight tester, Resistance decade box, Millivolt simulator, Digital Multimeter, Digital Clamp meter, Pressure and temperature calibrator etc.
  4. Introduction to various types of cables used in instrumentation like Instrument cable, control cable, power cable, system Cable etc. Cable meggering, installation, termination and testing procedure.
  5. Wiring in different field device, Junction Box, Local Control panel, Marshalling Panel and PLC.
  6. Familiarize with project specifications & Drawings like P & ID, ILD, HOOK-UP, and Location lay out, Wiring diagram, Instrument Block Diagram and working procedure.
  7. Installation, Calibration and loop testing of process instruments like PG, PT, PDT, PSH,PSL, TG, RTD, TC, TT, TSH, TSL, FT, LT, Control valves, Solenoid Valve, Emergency shutdown valve etc.
  8. Fault finding and Troubleshooting tips.
  9. Maintenance procedure and important safety precaution to taken care during Preventive and corrective maintenance.
